We are excited to share our latest publication in npj Digital Medicine: "A Survey of Skin Tone Assessment in Prospective Research" 📄✨. Motivated by biases in noninvasive medical devices (such as pulse oximeters and dermatology AI algorithms) disproportionately affecting patients with darker skin tones - and FDA efforts to incorporate skin tone in device evaluation, we aimed to review and improve best practices for studying skin tone in clinical research.
🔍 Key Insights:
- 📋 Methods Review: Our analysis of existing skin tone assessment tools highlights limitations in visual scales and identifies potential opportunities with colorimetric devices (e.g., colorimeters, spectrophotometers, cameras).
- 📏 Recommendations: We propose standardized methods for skin tone measurement and stress the importance of balancing datasets by skin tone and race to enhance the validity and generalizability of future research findings.
