Investors, look away. If I ever decide to raise, this post probably won't do me any favors.
It's #TechWeek in Seattle, and something that has come up often is the concept of a lifestyle business (a business that affords its founder(s) some work/life balance).
There's a major stigma in the startup community around being a lifestyle business. It's a red flag for investors, and most founders turn their noses up at the idea.
I find it all pretty toxic. The implication is that the ideal startup needs its people to fully sacrifice their personal lives to succeed.
In a lot of spaces, we've stopped glorifying the grind—it's not cool any more to crunch until midnight, or to tough it out and come to work sick.
Why is it that the startup ecosystem, which theoretically should be leading the way, is lagging behind on concepts like mental health, burnout, and work life balance?

"Having 1 friend at work is enough to significantly reduce the odds of loneliness."
The problem is that so many people don't have a single friend at work—before working with Thred, an average of 1 in 4 of our clients' employees had no work friends.
I find it hopeful that while the loneliness problem is extensive, it's not unsolvable by any means.
