Today, I’m celebrating my one year anniversary as Chief Executive Officer at Relay Platform, and what a year it’s been!  While I had many ideas in my head as to what this role would entail, never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined the highest highs and the lowest lows that come along with the position.

Shortly after starting at Relay, the full scale of the cyber market dynamic shift came into focus.  The market was no longer rapidly hardening and our business came under new pressure while simultaneously working to rapidly execute a full turnaround of the company.  Our prior business model required a full reboot, from the customers we serve to the partners we work with and the entirety of how our business operates efficiently.  My first month was full of long days and bad dreams at night, full of worries about how to lead a company and build followership in this role.  So I did what any good student of business should do: I read.

I credit books like "The Hard Thing About Hard Things" by Ben Horowitz as one of the most critical sources of insight while managing the hard things we had to do at Relay.  Each chapter was directly relevant to the experiences I was facing and served as my guide with the next section almost immediately addressing the current situation.  And then I finished the book and there was no more crystal ball to help with the next challenge.

Since then, I’ve grown into my own kind of leader with no more secret guidebooks to help me figure out the next steps to take.  I relied on my experiences, education, and character to guide my decisions and the company as a whole.  A few notable accomplishments in this past year illustrate how far we’ve come and prove that there’s more work to be done:

  • We hit an all-time high usage level on our platform in January, just 7 months after I started.  We then doubled that number three months later.
  • We launched the first AI quote bot in the insurance industry, Quotie McQuotebot (or, just Quotie™)
  • We added multiple new carriers to our panel, some of which as first-time digital APIs
  • We established values for our company and hold ourselves to the highest standards every day
  • We rebuilt our culture around problem solving and resilience, using creativity and deepened relationships with our customers to accelerate product-market fit
  • We navigated pressure against our financial obligations

This is a hard role and probably not for everyone.  There’s no doubt about it.  But the personal and professional growth that comes with these experiences are second to none.  I am incredibly appreciative of all of my mentors, colleagues, supporters, and friends for their guidance, support, and sometimes tough love (which we all need sometimes).

There’s a long road ahead.  This past year was just the first few steps.  I’m proud to walk this road with my colleagues, customers, partners, and advisors and see what comes next.

There is nothing more rewarding than spending time with students learning about the economics of the world.

I’ve been waiting for today for an entire year.

Last year I volunteered while my son’s class went to Young AmeriTowne in 5th grade, where the students learned about personal finance and a town’s economy.

Today, I’m volunteering again, this time for my son’s 6th grade class trip to InternationalTowne, where they will learn about global economics and more.

It’s days like this that help put the hustle and bustle of work in perspective and give my time back to the next generation of future leaders.
