Own the outcome. That’s it. That’s the post.
I started on a journey late last year consulting for different product companies at Clockwerk and got to see how more product teams operate. This ranged from AI prototypes, to re-designing onboarding experiences, to honing prioritization, and adopting real-time feedback systems to close the loop between product and customer-facing teams. I have to say it was addictive to have this much impact so quickly in a product leadership role.
But I kept having this nagging feeling: Am I really helping?
It was great to get so many “at bats” on actual solutions to customer problems and internal challenges but I realized what most consultants have realized: the principal agent problem is real. You’re not the leader who carries the responsibilities at the company, or the one implementing the decisions & processes in the end and you may not be there long enough to ensure the change happens.. It became painfully clear to me that the only way to have lasting value was to be closely connected to the customer and own the outcome.
There was one company where I felt I was having a more lasting impact: Pave. At this company, impact means companies can better retain their employees and sell candidates through ensuring they are competitively paid across the globe. After being introduced to William Castillo, I set about trying to understand what the team needed to deliver a product over a wide surface area with a strong R&D team, and there was so much to discover & help with!
And so after spending 8+ years in HR Tech, I’m back in the game running Product @ Pave. I’ve already spent time with 20+ of our top customers and what I can say unequivocally: They love the Pave product and want us to succeed in transforming both the data and processes that helps them impact the financial bottom line of both their employees and companies equally.
Most of all, I’m excited to work with Matt Schulman, Charlie Nelson, William Castillo, Kilian Marsh,DeAnna C. ,Samuel Ford, Reigan Combs, Mallory Foutch, Zack Smetana, Madeleine Tsao, Claire Rowell, Lucas Baier, Megan TeeKing, Kalan Porter, Chris Prinz, Nicholas Lepley and many other Pave team members to bring an absolutely killer set of products to market.
Shoutout to everyone who helped me along the way over these past few months Raymond W., 🌉 Luke Dziurzynski 🌉, James Levy, Max Caldwell, Emily Campbell, Raj Gajwani, Vinod Valloppillil, Ethan Steininger, Justin Bischoff, Kerry Hannigan Munz, Jessie Schafer, Nitin Puri, Allan Luk, Marshall Guttenberg and Sumeet Pannu. Last but not least I have to thank my amazing and wonderful wife Maggie Sheldon who was making a transition of her own to a new role at Benchling. I’m forever grateful to her for the exploration she allowed me to do over the last year and a half that led me here.
