In a recent blog post by Will Larson about Layers of Context for Staff+ Engineers & Management, one bullet point particularly struck a chord with me.
“Operate from a place of curiosity rather than conviction. When folks say things that don’t make sense to you, it’s almost always because they’re operating at a layer whose context you’re missing. When you’re befuddled by someone’s perspective, instead of trying to convince them they’re wrong, try to discover that layer and its context. This is a perspective that gets more valuable the more senior you get.”
This is incredibly true and in so many different settings. Whether you’re having a normal interaction at someplace you’ve been working at for years, a new joiner to an organisation or community navigating your first weeks/months, or even just some random event you stumble across on the street that you don’t initially understand. Part of being open-minded and inclusive requires a level of curiosity, an active willingness and level of engagement to go beyond to understand. This is vital for a leader, but I’d argue is important for all of us as empathetic humans.
