I'm happy to announce that I'm taking one of my childhood dreams seriously, and I've agreed to be represented by The Seymour Literary Agency for my memoir. In 2007, my father had an embolism and nearly died, and nearly losing him scared me into finally doing something with a business idea I'd been kicking around for years without action. So, I created a website called CanGoogleHearMe.com, just out of university. It was my blog about flying to Mountain View, CA uninvited to sit in Google's lobby every day for a week until they either heard out my "genuinely good idea," - as I called it - or threw me out every day for a week. It was a terrifying moment in my life, but it was that or just... give up on it.
The site went viral, became the 5th-fastest growing website in the world for one week as it spread through international media - calling me The Google Kid - and ended up with thousands of people sending me good luck emails and cheering me on. Years later, the idea behind CanGoogleHearMe.com became BookLamp and was acquired by Apple.
For years, I've thought that the founding story of CGHM was inspiring, not because of me, but because the world proved that it's filled with warm and supportive people, if they know about you. To this day I still have a book of more than 3,000 emails from complete strangers that I can take out and read over whenever I'm feeling low.
A few months ago, my friend @romancebyrachel and her husband Nate convinced me I should take that story more seriously. Rachel is a NY Times bestselling author, and it's easy to take her seriously. Actually what she said was, "This should be a Netflix series," and that sounded sort of fun. It was her encouragement and introduction that led me to Seymour. Thank you, Rachel and Nate.
So after years of working in publishing, writing articles read by millions of people - but never a book - I'm finally returning to the dream of being an author that drove me at 16 years old. How exciting. :)
