Highlights
It is amazing how much, for some people, community impacts commitment.
As many of you have seen, I have been an avid #Movember participant for over a decade. I am proud of the funds and awareness raised and had a blast doing it. For the last four years, I've been in Ohio in a remote capacity where I wasn't growing a Mo with anyone else.
Last weekend as I prepared to ride 50 miles with thousands of other riders for Pelotonia, I felt surprisingly unmotivated for Movember this year and it got me thinking why that was.
It came down to the connection I felt to the activity and not the cause, based on the community. Curing cancer and investing in men's health are both still deeply meaningful to me. Growing a mustache is always fun for me. I love riding a bike. But growing a 'stache alone, or at best virtually and with weak bonds, just doesn't have the same feeling anymore.
Here's hoping I can find a community of mo bros locally before Movember rolls around!
This line of thinking can be extrapolated into many other things.
It turns out that a day full of meetings can be exhausting.
I was off for a little while before I got back in the saddle at FusionAuth. I forgot how tiring meetings can be. In my time off I rode my bike a lot, which was a blast, so my endurance fitness is in great shape.
My "meeting fitness," however, was very low and I have found myself low on energy at the end of the day as I build it back up. The things we forget or take for granted!
It is a good reminder to change things up often enough to either not take it for granted or get complacent.
