Props Consulting Leadership Toolkit Series Week 5: Prioritization

As we dive into the final week of the Leadership Toolkit Series, we tackle one of the most critical yet often misunderstood elements of leadership - Prioritization!

Intentional or not, every single decision we make throughout the day represents our priorities. Fairly early on in my career I was working on a large internal system implementation. During the planning phase, various teams had submitted their requests with definition, functionality, and priority. We went through about 40% of the requests and about 90% of them were marked high. I stopped and said, “Hold on, if everything is a high priority, we don’t have any priorities.”

  1. Establishing Priorities - It's crucial to clearly define and distinguish the levels of priority. Without clear demarcation of what is urgent, important and less significant, we risk creating a chaotic work environment where every task appears to warrant immediate attention.

  2. Maintaining Communication - Equally essential is continual communication about these priorities. Circumstances change; new tasks emerge, others lose their urgency. It's worth taking the extra time to ensure everyone is on the same page about what needs their attention - and when.

  3. Instilling Realistic Expectations - As leaders, we must balance ambition with realism. Every team member's day is a series of choices about how to allocate time. It's crucial to trust your team to make these choices wisely - without falling into the trap of micro-management.

With that, we conclude this month’s series! Stay tuned for next month's topic - a topic close to my heart. In full transparency, it was originally slated for one of the Leadership Toolkit installments, but there is a lot of material to cover. As always, feel free to reach out to create your own Emerging Leadership Development program. Each topic we've covered is available as individually tailored modules, along with many others! Thanks for reading! #Prioritization #Leadership #Engagement

Props Consulting Leadership Toolkit Week 3: Handling Sticky Situations

This is a fun one! I’ve been thinking about how to tackle this topic but the truth is, there are so many scenarios to cover – and a whole host of others that will be new to all of us! I could describe obvious things like conflict resolution, misaligned expectations, difficult conversations, etc. Or some less common situations like finding yourself managing your former peers.

Given that it's practically impossible to prepare for every single eventuality, here are some strategies that could assist you in any situation, sticky or otherwise.

Listen: In a world where everyone wants to be heard, being a listener is a rare and powerful quality.  It's incredibly easy to start forming your response as someone is talking to you. It’s ok, I’ve done it. We all have. This takes practice, but it’s worth it. Focus not just on the words someone is using, but also their tone and body language. That can be more telling. Bottom line – be fully present.

Pause: It’s perfectly acceptable to take a beat before you react. That’s not to say you should punt everything or let a week go by before you respond. In fact, letting too much time go can be quite counterproductive too. Just take a second, process, and then respond. In fact, ~98% of the time, my initial response is actually a question, which brings me to my next point.

Ask Questions: Dig deeper. Probe. Clarify. The initial presentation of the scenario is usually incomplete, so ask, “why”, “how”, and “what if”. The truth is, when you ask, you empower others to discover answers on their own and consider different perspectives.

This is a cycle – Listen. Pause. Ask. Repeat. For every tough situation and every challenging conversation, these are the fundamental pillars of my approach to leading, mentoring, and coaching.

Stay tuned for Props Consulting Leadership Toolkit Week 4 and remember, always: Listen. Pause. Ask. Repeat. Want to explore more on how to effectively navigate through sticky situations?
