SaaS companies have been investing heavily in AI but failing to see the returns - leading to a tough earnings season and some declaring SaaS is dead!!
In our last blog in this series of Value Monetization in Age of AI, Sam Lee and I discussed the spectrum of usage-based pricing metrics, in this one we delve into another important aspect: Packaging of AI for SaaS.
Key takeaways: (full article in comments)
🔧 Software is becoming easier and faster to create with AI lowering barriers to entry for new entrants and commoditizing traditional feature advantage.
💸 GenAI adds an entirely new dimension of cost to serve which scales differently and very quickly putting a lot of pressure on otherwise high software margins.
📊 As AI creates business challenges for SaaS due to potential revenue cannibalization and a source of COGS escalation, pricing and packaging will become key strategic levers every SaaS company will need to retool their business for AI.
🚀Tried and tested frameworks for packaging do not change - check out excellent materials from the book Monetization Innovation and recent blogs by Palle Broe and Lenny Rachitsky (a must read)
💡What changes with GenAI in SaaS is WHAT you package. Sam Lee and I argue that packaging in the new GenAI world will be built around value differentiation of what AI brings to the table (see graphic below).
AI offerings start looking more like services being provided where the buyer of the service has an outcome in mind and is looking to delegate partially or in whole a task or a workflow (a job to be done) at a predefined budget. The human buyer expects a certain level of communication, integrity, consciousness, and trust from the service provider (the AI software).
Like service offerings which scale by level of touch and responsibility taken over by the providers the new paradigm in AI offerings will be how much can AI automate and how much the human has to be in the loop.
Software as a Service is NOT dead ... with AI we might have just got our Ss backwards ... Service as a Software

B2B tech companies need to adapt their strategies and operations to achieve profitable growth.
2024 has been a tough market for software. In talking to fellow operators, we identified 3 barriers to growth: -- Increased cost of capital & reduced investment on new software -- Reduced customer demand & extended sales cycles -- Increasing pricing pressure from enterprise customers & higher churn risk from smaller customers
9 actions which have proven successful for profitable growth across offer strategy, revenue operations, and monetization:
📈💡 Adjust value proposition messaging - by emphasizing ROI
💰⚖️ Offer a more affordable alternative to prevent costly re-acquisition. Ensure product performance aligns with price
📦📉 Simplify the portfolio to increase sales efficiency and reduce costs
📊🔍 Build a churn prediction model to identify high-risk customers and plot their risk scores alongside strategic importance for smarter pricing decisions
🛠️🗣️ Develop a concession framework, using it to craft a negotiation strategy that avoids unnecessary discounting
💵✅ Align your pricing model with the actual value derived
🎯📈 Adjust your sales approach to prioritize realistic revenue goals and improve operational efficiency. E.g. existing accounts often yield higher returns than acquiring new logos during an economic downturn
🏆💼 Refine the sales incentivization scheme to prioritize expansion and retention revenue while keeping the sales force motivated
🧠🎤Leverage the fundamentals of behavioral economics to equip your sales team with effective trigger questions, customer references, and a motivating cultural environment
