How to get someone to divulge any information to you . . . One FBI-inspired technique I like to use when dealing with challenging conversations is called “indirect criticism”.
This allows participants to share their deepest experiences, all without feeling pressured or judged because it:
- Creates a conversational atmosphere that puts participants at ease
- Encourages open dialogue about sensitive topics
- Uncovers rich, authentic insights that drive meaningful product improvements
Here's a quick glimpse into how it works:
- Frame the topic indirectly (e.g., "I read somewhere...")
- Share a relatable story
- Allow the participant to open up
- Connect their story back to the broader topic
You can use this technique for hard conversations or when someone seems closed off to having any interaction.

🔍 How to crack the code of someone's buying behavior in 6 minutes
I've just finished reading "The 6 Minute X-ray" by Chase Hughes, and introduces an interesting concept on how to understand how people make purchasing decisions, which he calls:
🗺️ The Decision Map:
- Deviance
- Novelty
- Social
- Conformity
- Investment
- Necessity
Most people fall into TWO primary decision-making categories when buying.
For instance, if you're on the "necessity" scale, you might also lean towards investment or conformity, but only within adjacent categories.
🤔 Can you guess where you fall on this map?
💡 My Personal Insight: I realized I'm on the deviance scale. I love purchasing items that help me stand out and break cultural norms. This aligns perfectly with my passion for underdog stories and explains a lot about my buying habits!
Have you used any behavior profiling techniques in your work or personal life? Share your experiences below!

Interestingly, most people primarily use two of these when deciding to buy something.
I realized I'm on the "deviance" scale - I tend to buy things that help me stand out or break norms.
This actually fits with my love for underdog stories. It's fascinating to see how our preferences show up in different areas of our lives.
The book suggests that if you're on one end of the scale (like deviance), your secondary factor is usually one of the two adjacent ones (so novelty or social, in my case).
Has anyone else noticed patterns in their buying decisions? Or used any tools like this to understand behavior better?
