There are a lot of restaurant brands thinking about their customer engagement / martech stacks right now.

The driving theme seems to be flexibility in how they engage and reward guests. Brands are broadening their stacks to include specialist providers like CDPs or marketing automation.

I'm seeing 4 levels of specialization:

Level 1: traditional all-in-one loyalty provider.

The traditional provider that powers data collection and management, loyalty points, tiers, offers, and marketing automation. Marketing messaging is primarily restricted to email and push, since the all in one providers build + maintain the mobile app.

Level 2a: traditional loyalty provider + a specialist messaging provider for email, sms, and push notifications.

Leveraging a best in class marketing tool gives flexibility in frequency, cadence, and length of campaigns, including multi-step and multi-channel journeys, while keeping your core CRM / loyalty engine intact.

Level 2b: traditional loyalty provider + CDP for better segmentation and guest analytics.

Offers greater flexibility in who you target and based on what factors (i.e. using Bikky's predictive analytics for when customers are about to lapse or churn).

The right CDP also gives you much greater visibility into the differences between non-loyalty and loyalty guests. This gives valuable insight into the incrementality of your promotions and loyalty program overall.

Level 3: CDP + traditional loyalty + marketing automation.

All the benefits above: you keep the core loyalty and promos engine intact, while adding specialist providers on data coming into your system and messaging going out. Potentially higher cost (though should yield higher ROI) and learning curve for your team.

Level 4: specialized everything

CDP + specialized offers engine + marketing automation under the hood, custom front-end for web and mobile ordering on top.

If you can dream it, you can execute on it from an offers, loyalty, and creative standpoint. This path offers full flexibility across digital experience, loyalty, targeting, engagement, and analytics.

Caveat: you are trading a traditional loyalty provider for a specialized promo / offers engine under the hood, so you are effectively committing to a new guest-facing digital experience. This is less scary than it used to be given there are specialized providers in our space, but still an important consideration.

What path to choose?

Well that depends on a host of factors unique to your brand, including your: ➡️ budget constraints (ad fund, tech fee) ➡️ level of guest frequency and engagement with your current program ➡️ promo + discounts strategy ➡️ culinary + marketing innovation pipeline

There’s no one size fits all.

That’s what makes it an exciting time from my side of the table. We are in the middle of seeing some of the most beloved consumer brands reshape their strategies for an increasingly digital future.

Greater specialization looks to be a part of it.

Your business is nothing without your customers, and there's a very strong argument that Bikky wouldn't exist without Eggs Up Grill.

They took a bet on us in our earliest stages of building our data platform, and I can't describe how much joy I felt when Haley Hendrix described us to a franchisee yesterday as "the number one customer data platform in the restaurant industry."

Their ongoing support, partnership, care, and candor is an exemplar of what two companies can do together when they're philosophically and tactically aligned.

Here's to the entire Eggs Up team. Thanks for hosting Charlotte Knobloch and me, believing in our team, making us better, and including us as part of your incredible growth - both in the past and what's to come in 2024.

As they say in Spartanburg - and many other cities - EGGS UP! 🍳

And of course, special shoutout to another Bikky OG, Groucho's Deli . No trip to Spartanburg would be complete for me without a Baby Bella Melt for lunch!!
