AI-generated educational videos were found to be just as effective as human-created ones but at 100x less the cost.

A research paper titled “Investigating the potential of synthetic learning videos” shared results from one of the first studies of the effectiveness of AI-generated educational videos.

Researchers created two micro-courses on clean energy, one featuring videos generated with the Synthesia platform and the other using traditional filming methods. Participants, randomly assigned to each group, took pre- and post-assessments along with a satisfaction survey.

The findings were remarkable: ➡️ Learning outcomes were equal - Students in both groups learned the same amount. ➡️ Student satisfaction was high - Overall, participants were equally satisfied with their respective courses. ➡️ AI was undetected - Most students couldn't tell whether their videos were AI-generated.

While the study involved a modest sample size of 83 learners, the results hold significant promise.

Similar results were found in another study conducted using Prof Jim Inc., a platform that generates videos using an AI avatar.

AI-generated videos are drastically cheaper and easier to produce, allowing for more educational content creation and faster updates in rapidly evolving technological landscapes. This can be powerful for industries urgently needing skilled professionals, like clean energy.

I don’t believe AI-generated videos, especially as they are today, are the answer to all asynchronous, online educational content.

But if certain types of content can be made and updated more easily and cheaply, we may be able to upskill, reskill, and simply skill learners more effectively than ever before.
