Most big human ideas have come from intuition and imagination. The structure of benzene came in a reverie. I doubt anyone would’ve wanted an electric car in 2003, the year Tesla was founded. The instances are endless, really.
Don’t get me wrong. Intuitive ideas must be examined, but not through the lens of data. Instead, they must be examined through the lens of structured argument. Much like what is taught in philosophy, structured argument is the mathematics of words. Imagination is not vague, if the one doing the imagination is articulate.
It is this culture of articulation we need to facilitate, so that intuition and imagination can be used to think of ideas that have exponential effects. Linear thinking will only give you linear growth.

Product leaders often hire in their image.
Ex-consultants hire consultants as PMs, for their ability to deal with complexity. Leaders with an entrepreneurial background hire small company “hustlers”. PMs with a dev background hire other developers or ex-devs. I have also been guilty of this.
But if 2011’s MSD built a team of eleven athletic wicket keepers, I don’t think India would’ve have won the World Cup.
Product management is gradually becoming a commoditised skill, and people from different backgrounds are able to wrap their head around it with relative ease. Much like cricket.
