Are you enabling your channel partners to be successful?

The Slack vs. Micrisoft Teams story reminds us the value of distribution. Distribution trumps design and innovation in most cases. Its a partnership game - and can come in different variants - distributors, dealers, franchisee, channel partner, reseller, etc.

As an enterprise or principal, it is critical to invest in your digitization, but equally important to help your partners.

Most partners would not have means or capabilities to implement cutting edge digital strategies. It pays (in multiples) in long term. Some examples:

  1. Customer analytics to identify their top clients, their habits, and how they can be up-sold or cross-sold. You can bring out insights, suggested actions, and even automation to maximize potential of each partner.

  2. Sales analytics to understand highs and lows of customer demand and supply, so that they can normalise distribution. Your job is not to sell to them, but to help them sell without keeping excess inventory.

  3. Better segmentation for recommending the right product to the right customer at the right time.

  4. Sharing of best practice across partnership network.

  5. Digital marketing to generate more demand for them to act upon.

  6. Ability to monitor sales performance of their sales and servicing team, such that the sales effort and customer experience can be centrally monitored.

  7. Centralised and gamified learning and development of all employees, more so for customer facing team members, so that there is a consistent experience for customers across the board.

You get the drift?

The idea is to not think them as mere sales channel, but your own organisation, and provide them all digital tools to compete and serve in the market. The better you enable them, the better they will deliver.

How do you enable your channel? What can you do to help them do their job better?

p.s. till the time they do not serve as good as you (as a promoter) do, your job of channel enablement is not done.

Capital vs. Talent: What Really Drives Growth in Scaling Businesses?

When scaling a growth-stage company, it's easy to assume that capital is the kingpin. I always used to think this in the early days of Indus Net Technologies (INT.)

But let's rethink this for a moment. Yes, capital is crucial, but I argue that talent is the real game changer.

Here's why:

Imagine you have all the capital your heart desires but lack a team with the right skills, mindset, and innovation drive. What happens? Your growth stalls. Capital alone can't solve complex problems, inspire brilliance, or ignite market-shifting ideas—only people can.

On the flip side, with a strong, talented team, even modest capital can propel significant growth. Talented individuals leverage resources smartly, innovate to overcome constraints, and drive efficiencies that multiply the impact of every dollar invested.

Therefore, if you find your company well-capitalized but struggling to scale, take a closer look at your talent bench. Are you investing as strategically in people as you are in financial capital? Focus on building a leadership pipeline.

Conversely, if you're leading a talented team but are tight on capital, remember: your situation is preferable. Talent can attract capital because smart money knows the value of smart people.

In conclusion, while capital is necessary, without the right talent, it is a rocket without a crew. But with the right team on board, any amount of capital can be put to its highest and best use, ensuring not just growth but sustainable success.

You need the right talent - who is curious, humble, strategic, and brings the execution ability to convert that capital into growth.

Most importantly, the talent must be empowered and enthusiastic about building the business with an ownership mindset.

We have observed it first hand in INT. by assessing our periods of rapid growth and relative stagnation. Today, we invest heavily in leadership development, and empower our team with "right to experiment and fail", and ownership through stock options.

To conclude, let's prioritize talent acquisition, development, and empowerment; more than we chase capital. Because in the end, it’s not just about how much you have, but what you do with it—and who you do it with.

Remember, you can always bootstrap, but cannot build a company without the right set of people.
