In honor of #internationalcoworkingday, a shoutout to the members of Medford Cowork Collective.

MCC began as a dream I held many years ago. We opened our doors in 2020, but it became a reality because of everyone who has come together over the years.

Our members make MCC more than a space to get work done – a real community of innovation, support, and friendship.

We held our International Coworking Day celebration today (shoutout waffle bar!!) and I’m reflecting on why coworking spaces like ours are so vital – especially in growing rural areas like Medford, OR.

As I recently shared in an interview with GCUC - Global Coworking Unconference Community, I’m proud of creating work opportunities for people who fall outside the traditional view of coworking front line work.

In our team of hospitality hosts we have a 70-year-old grandma, and a host placed with us through Living Opportunities Inc, a local org that supports job creation for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

And our members! We've got professionals both young and old, spanning so many industries – from tech startups to local businesses, freelancers to remote workers.

Seeing daily interactions, new collaborations forming, and people genuinely enjoying being part of the community is deeply fulfilling.

Thank you to all coworkers worldwide for showing up, bringing your whole self to the table, and making this global community more than I could have ever hoped for.

I’m into what’s happening with rural coworking. Obvs we all love a swanky metro space with “cold brew on tap” and “nap pods”, but rural spaces like Cybermill and Kernville Cowork are providing a super necessary service to their community. (shoutout Didgette McCracken, Justin S Powers)

These aren't just offices; they're lifelines for their communities. And here's the kicker - they're rocking sustainable business models in their own unique way.

Here's why I'm looking closer at rural coworking these days for inspo:

→ Community first, last, always: These spaces are fostering connections and collaboration where they're needed most. → A different model: It's not all about maxing out the P&L with every inch of square footage marked with 💰. These spaces prove there's more than one way to build a sustainable business. → Simplicity!!: No frills—just solid internet. A good workspace can be enough. → Diverse Revenue Streams: Who says you need to rely on high-ticket room bookings and spending private offices? I’ve seen lots of rural spaces getting creative with how they generate income and provide value.

The beauty of these smaller spaces? They're rewriting the rules of what "success" looks like in the #coworking world.

It's not about sky-high profits or rapid expansion — it's about serving their community in a way that's sustainable and true to their values. I think we could all learn from that.

Have you experienced a rural coworking space that deserves a shout-out?
