Who knew empathy would be so important to access during Election Season???
Every two weeks, we do what we call a Maximum Value Practice (MVP) in The Arena Men's Group. It's a fancy name for homework :)
And since we've been talking about empathy a lot over the past several weeks, this MVP was all about empathy. Here's what we asked the 14 men in the group to do:
***Think of someone in your life that you're currently in conflict with or disagree with about something that gets in the way of your relationship. In other words, think of someone you currently have a bias about. Maybe it's their political or religious beliefs, maybe it's how they approach managing people in your company, maybe it's something about how they show up in The Arena, maybe it's the fact that they love the Yankees and it just pisses you off ;)
After you've thought of a person who fits that description, take at least one ACTION in order to be a better ally for that person. Set aside your judgments and bias and bring empathy to them in order to support them, connect with them, or illuminate them. Go BE an illuminator.***
Well, everyone shared their MVPs yesterday and 90% of them had to do with bringing empathy to a friend or family member they had different political viewpoints from.
Wow!
I can't say I'm actually too surprised, though. There's a distinct lack of empathy in how political conversations happen in our country (and the world).
In reading the MVPs, I saw men connecting with friends and family in different ways and really listening to one another.
What would be possible if we all leaned into empathy in a greater way over the next three months or so (and why stop at three months)? What might we create for ourselves? For each other? For our country? For the world?
P.S. A lot of this was inspired by David Brooks' book "How To Know a Person." Thank you Ron Carucci for the recommendation!

Today, in The Arena Men's Group's private online community, one of the men shared that he's noticed that throughout relationships (particularly work ones), we often have to speculate that people trust us or find value in our work until...
𝗪𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗘𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆, 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗲𝘁𝗰!!!
It's been my experience too.
People say all the wonderful things they've been thinking when we're heading out the door.
It's like the vulnerability factor is reduced.
We might never see that person again so we can fully acknowledge them.
Or, they've already done great work for us so we don't have to worry about them getting complacent after being told how valuable they are.
Woof!
𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲" 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.
Even funerals happen AFTER someone has departed.
What do you think could be different? How do you think we begin to change this pattern?
