Highlights
Are you human-centred, or do you still have the potential to grow?
For those of you who have no time or patience, I’ll jump directly to the point🚀Are you aware of what your teammates need today? If yes, great; if not, ups, you might not be human-centred yet.
As a seasoned researcher, team leader and instructor of design thinking (DT) and human-centred design (HCD) in particular, I often work with groups aiming to strengthen their skills so that they can better empathise with ‘users’, solve problems faster and land products and services that truly matter. I frequently observe that they focus primarily on what I sense as the external world - on methods, frameworks, techniques and processes, believing they are the key to becoming great at HCD. While they are all critical and helpful, I don't think they lie at the core of being ‘human-centred’. To me, it's more a state of mind - the internal urge to design for people, not ‘users’. To focus on fears, dreams, experiences, pains, gains, and some more profound sense of curiosity about who people are and how they feel in various situations and contexts.
Here come your teammates and their state of mind, life context and feelings. Are you aware of what they need today? Are you interested in it? Some psychologists say, ‘If you want to love others, you must love yourself first’, or ‘charity starts at home’. I will borrow it to say, ‘Human-centred design starts in a team’. What might it mean?
If you aim to develop your skills in HCD, start in and with your team. Change happens all the time-respond to it and design for it. It's pretty straightforward - ask what your folks need today, and if you're a leader - focus on solving their blockers and unlocking their full potential. Small, tiny details matter - as Dalai Lama once said - ‘If you think you are too small to make a difference, you haven't spent the night with a mosquito’. Take your teammate's mosquitos out of their room and help them flow.
Driving change effectively does not start with methods and processes; it begins with people. Not users, not employees, but people.
Hello lovely people! What a week, tgif.
Do you have any tech friends, or friends of friends looking for a co-founder (CTO) role to build an MVP? We’re hiring.
Wow, it took us 4 years to nail the process manually, we owe so many drinks to so many feedback givers, partners, clients, co-facilitators, fellow coaches, … (I could add 10 more lines).
Reflection: not to start building from a dream, but from hard work, step by step, is hard… but it’s also nice to feel ready 😉 what do you think, boss Larissa Menocci?
