It’s been said that it’s hard to really understand what it’s like to be a parent until you are, but I’m going to try.
Inside your head, there is this imaginary house. It has all these rooms, filled with all the things you love: vivid memories of those you cherish most, all your travels and special moments, all the sunsets, music, art, books; anything and everything that ever stirred your soul or moved you in some way, is in those rooms.
When you spend time rooting around your house, it’s the most luxurious time you can spend in your mind. It’s all that you love, in one place, curated for you.
Having a child is like having a whole new wing of your house light up, almost instantly. The new wing ends up being bigger than your original house. And more interesting because the person in that new wing is not only part of you, but is informed by everything in the original house. And for a time at least, you can curate a whole world for a person. “Today the house is a ship, and we are going to be pirates.”
I often think about what matters most to me. This is how I rank order my identity: father, brother, son, founder and teacher. Each of these endeavors requires planning, stick-to-it-ness and actionable steps.
The satisfaction that comes from crafting a world and home for your family is incalculable. And having a plan to work towards those goals is critical to helping you get there.
