I oscillate between 𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 and 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳 when hearing that "𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦" is the new hot trend in investing.
The hopefulness comes from those who see investments as transition points to an emerging paradigm. The horror comes from lack of recognition there is a dominant paradigm that rules the House of Finance or the unruliness that willingly commodifies Nature.
New instruments, funds, and mechanisms that fund "Nature" yet still operate within the finance culture of separation, extraction, and dispossession fortify the dominant paradigm. "Nature positive pathways" often flow through public corporations' nature negative pathways. "Nature-related risks" operate on fear and hedge on collapse. Public markets of "Nature-related finance" do not fund Nature, but rather a new investment category to "mitigate financial risk and to protect the long-term economic interests" as exercised by Nature Action 100 https://lnkd.in/gV7Dze9r
I refuse to accept Nature as destined for the long end of a short rope. I'm heartened and inspired by those re/contextualizing and stewarding right relationship between Nature and financial capital. New fields are being born and projects emerge weekly within 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, and other nature-based investing instruments. These counternarratives are enlivening the field of what is possible to not only reshape imaginations, but also realities: • Just Transition Alliance & Just Transition Framework https://lnkd.in/gk2Cb7HM • Alexa Firmenich & Naia Trust https://lnkd.in/gg_k7BzF • Tom Chi & At One Ventures https://lnkd.in/gbw8XhbV • Superorganism https://lnkd.in/gBVmB3Yv • Samantha Power & team The BioFi Project https://www.biofi.earth • Bill Baue & r3.0 https://www.r3-0.org/gtac/ • John Fullerton & Capital Institute https://lnkd.in/gikz56aW
We'll soon be opening the Finance Transformation Lab to catalyze projects that flow capital towards BioTopia https://lnkd.in/gEZnyjnT. BioTopia offers a space to emerge new ventures and funds from an emerging paradigm that understands nature as sovereign and investment worthy. Investments that serve all life at the speeds and cycles of ecosystems. We know this is possible because is already happening.
If you are inspired by how investing in the biosphere can help transform finance, please join me in the next Edge Finance Accelerator https://lnkd.in/gtV9q7wa . The application deadline is August 1st.
Together we can flow capital to align with rather than negate nature's principles and metabolism. financingedges.com
