I've dedicated my life to inventing the bleeding edge of fundraising technology because I believe that inventing for the Social Good sector has the ability to change the world. Today is the most important day in our journey as we launch Version2.ai, an AI research and design lab focused entirely on inventing, building and scaling the first fully autonomous frontline fundraiser, powered by artificial intelligence.

Many people believe that it’s impossible to build a fully autonomous fundraiser, especially for a profession built on relationships that drive outcomes. Autonomous fundraising is, indeed, a moonshot, but it’s a worthwhile endeavor.

Through our R&D, we will prove that it’s possible for autonomous fundraisers work alongside traditional fundraisers (and most-likely for traditional fundraisers). Version2’s success will have a deep, lasting, and consequential impact, not only on the future of fundraising, but on humanity as a whole. Transparency, privacy and opt-in engagement will be at the core of all we do as we strongly believe that donors should have the opportunity to decide whether they want to engage with a traditional fundraiser or an autonomous one.

With technology as a starting point, we’ve partnered with Matthew Lambert and the visionary, inspiring and courageous fundraising team at William & Mary, William & Mary Foundation, University Advancement at W&M to prove that autonomous fundraising is both possible and inherently good, both for nonprofits and for donors.

Through our partnership, we will utilize autonomous fundraisers to reimagine the donor experience as we work to reinvent the student phonathon program, execute campus connections between donors and appropriate program leaders, scale alumni campus engagement and lifelong learning opportunities, facilitate annual unrestricted gift solicitations, and execute multiple stewardship opportunities that break through the digital threshold -- including mailing branded thank-you gifts and sending hand-written postcards, powered by ai-enabled robotics.

The fully autonomous fundraiser is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced and we look forward changing the world together.

Welcome to the future of fundraising.

Welcome to The Future of Fundraising.

Over the past year, my team and I have had more than 1,000 meetings with fundraising leaders across the nonprofit spectrum to learn more about their gift documentation, gift formalization, and gift fulfillment processes. No matter the type of organization, Higher Education, Independent Schools, Healthcare, Public Media, Museums, Cause-Based Organizations, or Faith-Based Organizations, we’ve observed that they all have what we are now calling a “Messy Middle.”

The messy middle is the time between when a donor is at the height of their excitement and belief in the mission of the organization – the moment they commit to their gift, and when that gift is closed. In that messy middle, there are forms, templates, revisions, approvals, signatures, layers of bureaucracy, compliance concerns and more. There are often multiple people who need to approve the gift and, every day that goes by, the donor’s sentiment is at risk.

At best, the messy middle can be organized, well-communicated and straightforward, leaving the donor with a wonderful impression of the experience and an expedited timeline to impact. At worst, the messy middle can ruin the relationship with the donor and sour the trust in the organization that the donor had when they committed to their gift. We saw countless examples of donors lowering their gift, canceling it all together or pledging to never make an other gift, all because of their experience in the messy middle. And this is why I believe we need to spend more time focused on finding efficiencies and considering the donor experience in the messy middle.

I’d like to invite you to join our team for a conversation on Thursday, April 4, as we present our findings on the Messy Middle. This session will cover best practices for eliminating donor risk associated with this stage of closing a gift and ways your organization can streamline the time between commitment to close to ensure all donors have an extraordinary experience with your organization.
