Think it’s hotter than is used to be?
- You are right
- It will get worse … for years and years.
“as bad as it is already, summer heat is only going to intensify. A 2021 study in Science found that, under countries’ current greenhouse gas reduction pledges, children born in 2020 will experience seven times as many heatwaves over their lifetime as people born in 1960. Those future waves will also last longer and feature ever higher temperatures than today’s.”

There are justifiable concerns in some regions of the US about electric grid reliability and the potential for outages from demand peaks that could out run generating reserves. Yet the reality is that by far the bigger cause of grid failures are outages caused by extreme weather.
The increasing scale and frequency of extreme (and deadly) storms is leading to massive outages due to the vulnerability of distribution and transmission … not generation.
This tragic storm in Texas is a case in point. At one point over a million consumers were without power. That is a grid reliability fail of epic proportions.
Extreme weather, exacerbated by #climatechange, points to the key role the grid has in mitigation. Namely accelerating the pace of #decarbonization and taking advantage of cheap and clean #renewableenergy to replace polluting and expensive #fossilfuel based resources … not just #coal (which is rapidly on the way out) but also #fossilgas.
