I haven't always been a dreamer; it just disappeared at some point. Maybe that's what happens in adulthood as we get wrapped up in the world around us, our careers, our loves won, and love lost, and everything else that comes our way in this increasingly complicated world.
As a kid, I would draw pictures of race cars and fighter jets. I distinctly remember drawing versions of the Lockheed X-15, the fastest manned rocket plane ever. This was perfect imagination material for an 8-year-old. So it would come as no surprise that as a teenager, driving fast cars and racing motorcycles would have to do instead of rockets with airplane wings. All inspiration must come from somewhere. And now, as I stare ahead at the next 18 months, I wonder- just what has inspired me now! I wouldn't call myself an adventurer; however, that is precisely what I'm about to do.
This April, I wrapped up a three-year stint at Tally under saddened circumstances. I said goodbye to team members during a layoff and to the team we had built, and I said goodbye myself, wishing them the best of luck. I'm grateful for that time, We built a heck of a team, and we built some pretty damned good infra. They're in good hands with my right-hand man, George, who I'm thankful to have called a friend these past 20 years. Our team's vision was to provide the best tools and technologies so our customers could trust us and build sustainably through the entire development lifecycle. And we did precisely that. With big changes, comes big opportunity.
And so, after more than 20 years of nonstop work navigating the seas of changes in technology, it's time for a new adventure on the seas themselves. Call it a temporary retreat to myself, my wife and son, and back to dreaming. This time, it's a dream to race again to Hawaii on our sailboat in the Pacific Cup race from San Francisco this July, bound to Oahu. And then? To sail the South Pacific, sailing to Fiji, and back through French Polynesia after a stopover in Southeast Asia. Our Planet Express will earn her namesake and become a Planet Express.
It's scary. It's exciting. It's the best combination of feelings. We'll make our way back to Canada in 2025, and back to work eventually, but for now it's time to dream again and recharge. Bula is the Fijian greeting or welcome, but it literally translates to life.
