Overheard on the subway 🚈

"So I see my colleague on the train on the way to work. I try saying hi but her headphones are in.

We're getting off the train together, so I get right in front of her face and wave 👋.

She looks right past me and keeps walking. I couldn't understand, because we get along fine at work.

At the office, I go to tell another colleague, because it was so weird.

That's when I find out: she's blind in one eye."

This story offers a straightforward takeaway about disability.

It also works as a metaphor about communication between colleagues.

We can't always know all the underlying factors that cause our communications to be misread.

Preach and practice understanding.

Keep trying to communicate while giving people the benefit of the doubt.

Is that a vintage trolley?

As we drew closer to examine with our kids, we realized the trolley wasn't stopped at the bus stop.

It was a private rental, parked in front of a pizza shop.

The ocassion?

Suprise birthday party for a recent MBA grad: BYOB pizza shop crawl.

Replete with scorecards, coozies, and ordering ahead to skip the massive lines at New York's most famous sauce slingers.

The person responsible?

Birthday boy's fiancee. A solid marketing professional who executed flawlessly across the board.

AND who insisted that we take a scorecard as a souvenir.

Two takeaways here:

  1. Creativity comes from the heart. For the people or causes you care most about. However small or grandiose the gesture, do something fun with people you love.

  2. Pray and give thanks for cheerful strangers. This party bus would have been well within their right to give our family the cold shoulder for cutting into their celebration. Instead they were remarkably kind about our curiosity, in a way that made us want to be more like them.

Happy birthday & congrats to the happy couple.
