"Hybrid Events Are the Future" – That bold claim from 2022? Not quite hitting the mark. Here’s why:
As someone who jumped into the event scene with Hopin (now RingCentral) Events back in May 2020 as their first US based AE, I’ve seen the rollercoaster of event formats firsthand. 🎢 Hybrid events seemed like the ultimate win—choose your own adventure, right? 🏆 But the reality has been a bit different:
- Double the Trouble: Managing both an in-person and virtual venue is like planning two events at once. Yikes! 😅
- Pricey Business: With all the extra setup and tech, hybrid events can get expensive. 💸
- Tech Tango: RTMP broadcasting adds a delay (around 12 seconds), making it tricky for in-person and virtual speakers to sync up. WebRTC can help but often lacks some of the needed features. 🎥🕒
- Different Worlds: Virtual and in-person experiences are still miles apart, which can lead to uneven engagement. 🌍✨
- Diverse Goals: Mixing in-person and virtual goals in one event can be a juggling act. Often, one format fits better than the other. 🤹♂️
My two cents? Most so-called “hybrid” events are just in-person gatherings with a live stream and on-demand content. 📹 The winning formula? A few big in-person events each year, with a bunch of fully virtual ones to keep the connection going. 🌐 Virtual event tech has come a long way, offering cool features and customization to make online events pop. 🚀
