Today begins alumni weekend at Truist Park and the Battery Atlanta.

To celebrate the return of 60 Braves legends, we will host a parade down Battery Avenue. Thousands of fans will line the street to cheer their heroes.

Across professional sports, many teams have an alumni day or weekend but I would suggest our connection to our former players runs much deeper. Alumni Weekend is not a one off promotion, but rather an inflection point on years long enduring focus. Our commitment to our players is core to our brand and its vitality. I'll explain.

  • We foster and benefit from inter-generational fandom.

Most notably for us at this moment, kids who grew up on the 90s Braves are now parents. In the same way they grew up on Chipper, Smoltz, Glavine, Maddux and Javy Lopez, their kids are growing up on Acuna, Albies, Riley, Olson and Harris. In Atlanta and throughout the Southeast, love of the Braves has become a family heirloom. Families are doing marketing for us. "Hand me down fandom" sells tickets.

  • We commit to our alumni year round and with a dedicated front office role.

Former Braves reliever and 1995 World Champion Greg McMichael along with his team of Doug Licitra and Kristi Cooper oversee our Alumni affairs efforts. What does that mean? First and foremost, it means keeping players connected to the franchise and making them feel a part of the Braves family through invitation and acknowledgement. It means giving them an outlet for their love of the game of baseball/softball through clinics and our own league, Braves Country Baseball/Softball. It means bringing them sponsorship deals and speaking engagements. And, most notably, it means involving them in our 2025 All-Star Game as "All-Star Ambassadors."

  • They are the cornerstone of fan experience

At the Braves, we define "fan experience" as the nexus of memory and emotion. There is a reason someone goes and buys someone's jersey, and it's often deeply personal. There are reasons fans fall in love with certain players- why a player becomes "my guy." Players personify the team and the team's role in someone's life and are often the reason why someone became a fan.

Over the course of the next few days, I will watch sophisticated adults stammer when they meet their childhood heroes. I'll see older fans become young again. I'll witness the smiles and all the photos. I'll hear stories being shared about great games, great performances, and most of all, the memories the players trigger.

And this weekend, I'll revel in what is one of our favorite things to do all year, welcome back our legends.

Go Braves!

John Hackworth and I grew up together in the City of Dunedin, Florida. From an early age, he knew what he wanted to do and he set out to do it.

We were high school teammates, camp counselors together through college, and have been friends since childhood. Both of us hold a special place in our hearts for the place we grew up, and for the coaches, teachers, and community that nurtured us. We also share a deep abiding love for the Western North Carolina mountains.

And childhood dreams came true... both of us have been fortunate to work in sports our entire professional careers.

But Hack's career is nothing short of remarkable. Don't take my word for it, he and Governor Ron DeSantis (also from Dunedin) are the only two folks I know from my hometown to have their own Wikipedia page.

He played collegiately at Brevard College in North Carolina and Wake Forest University (where he also was an assistant coach). He went on to become at the time the youngest coach in NCAA D1 history at the University of South Florida. Stints coaching the under 17s team for the U.S. Soccer Federation and head positions at Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union and United Soccer League (USL)'s Louisville City FC followed.

Over the years, our professional worlds have occasionally intersected. I certainly have tapped into his knowledge and expertise in soccer and he has helped me in a myriad of ways. When his name has come up in conversations, people always speak to his kindness, integrity and professional acumen. To say I am proud to know him is an understatement.

And now, after a stint as technical director for St. Louis CITY SC, Hack as been named interim coach. Here's to continued success!
