Highlights
I was recently in a discussion with a CXO level person in the media industry. He was talking of a time when he was at one of India’s largest traditional media houses. The way he tells it, a storm hit the boardroom one day. A seemingly routine exercise to reconcile some accounts opened a Pandora’s Box. Some old dues that had never been billed or fell through the cracks, and hence never collected emerged from that initial scrutiny. When the dust had settled, over Rs. 25 crores of outstanding, going back over 2-3 years was unearthed! I can only imagine the panic that must have set in. In this competitive business, when every rupee needs to be accounted for, here was news of such a massive sum of money that literally no one even knew about. Special teams were formed, and the focus shifted to reconciliation, billing, and collection. The good news is that over 90% of those dues were eventually collected, but that can’t have been without much handwringing and heartburn! This is a classic Revenue Operations challenge in such a complex business with so many dynamic moving parts. How to keep track of the sources from where revenue should be coming in? How to monitor what exactly is due and when? How to monitor when it does get collected? It’s up to the often-ignored RevOps folks in the backrooms to manage this scenario. They don’t often get the attention they deserve but they are incredibly crucial to financial success. That being so, isn’t it important to give them the smart tools they need to do their jobs well? Unless you can afford to leave large sums of money uncollected, the answer must be YES!

We have had the good fortune of engaging with a several large and medium sized Publishers and Media Houses in India and the APAC region. One common trend that has emerged consistently is that most traditional Publishers, such as ones focused on News and or Print, have seen their revenues suffer. Obviously this has not happened overnight. It's a culmination of the last decade and a half of miss-steps which has resulted in the current predicament for them.
But not all is lost. I still firmly believe that that Publishers have a LOT going for them. The ones with bold vision, who take control back of their audiences and their needs, and commitment to sustained tech investment will come back even stronger than ever!
