Top ten subject lines that make me want open a sales email...
Ok, last week I moaned about all the lazy-assed sales people who email me with "Adrian - Quick question" as if that was reason enough to open their tin of spam.
And then someone said "So what subject line WOULD you open?".
So here they are, in reverse order...
- [insert colleague's name] suggested I contact you
- [insert boss's name] suggested I contact you
- Are you looking for a [insert product type] solution?
- Can you help me?
- Can I buy you a coffee?
- Can I buy you lunch?
- You are invited to [insert name of a corporate event]
- You are invited to [insert of name of sporting/cultural event]
- I've got you tickets to a Chelsea game
- I've got you tickets to the Chelsea in the Champions League final
Well may be the last one is a bit hopeful, but my point is that this is a sliding scale of value AND personalisation (yes, I am Chelsea fan)... The higher the value and the more personalised it is, the higher the chances I will open the email and read the contents. Even if there are conditions in the email.
Highly personalised but low value, is ok (see numbers 9 and 10), but it's no cigar.
High value but NOT personalised (e.g. "I bought you VIP tickets to a Taylor Swift concert") is not going to grab me if I am not a Swiftie.
But overall, if you offer something of use or value, you are many, many times more likely to get engagement with your prospect. (I know, I know, anti-bribery laws... but "value" does not have to cost lots of money.)
Dear salesperson/cold-caller/lead generator,
Quick question...
Why do you think that putting "Quick Question" in the subject line is going to get your email read?
Do you know how many emails, texts, Whatsapps and InMails I get every day that start "Quick Question"? (clue: it's more than 1)
Do you know how many of them I actually open? (Clue: it's not more than 0)
Is that best practice?
Are there not more successful subject lines...?
