2 years ago I joined Agreena, a climate-tech scale-up that supports farmers to transition to #regenerativeagriculture through the issuance of #carboncredits. Regenerative agriculture turns agricultural land into carbon sinks, transforming farmland from one of the largest emitters of CO2 into a driving force against climate change.

I was attracted by the simplicity of Agreena’s mission: enabling impact that can be visible from the moon. Driven by climate urgency and sheer ambition, Agreena wanted to scale fast, and I was lucky to join the company in between their series A and B funding. It was an exciting time to be there, as we entered a phase of hypergrowth.

As I am looking for new opportunities, I wanted to share some lessons learned over the last two years, that I may elaborate on in future posts.

🌿 The importance of #NatureBasedSolutions (NBS) When you look at the scalability potential of NBS and the climate urgency, a focus on NBS is a no brainer. For example, when transitioning from conventional to regen ag, up to 0.6-1t CO2 can be removed per hectare of farmland per year. Carbon farming programs have shown that millions of hectares can be reached quickly – a speed impossible for other approaches such as Direct Air Capture (DAC), at a time when it is most needed.

💰 Value beyond carbon Regen ag brings an incredible range of benefits to nature, society and the economy, including improved soil health, lower water usage, climate resilience, and biodiversity. However, carbon programs have not been effective at communicating and reporting against these impacts. This is a missed opportunity, with the potential to drive significantly more value for farmers and landowners.

🐝 #Biodiversity measurement Carbon programs are struggling to report biodiversity for 3 main reasons: lack of scalable measurement, lack of biodiversity reporting clarity in the #voluntarycarbonmarket, and uncertainty on the value of biodiversity. Carbon programs have also had their hands full strengthening their carbon reporting and carbon certification, and in light of recent turmoil in the VCM, they are hesitant to try something even less explored than soil carbon measurement, like biodiversity.

💱 Diversity of assets Carbon programs need to build the flexibility to tailor their product to a wide range of buyers. Some are only interested in carbon removal credits, some others just want the emissions data (with no certification), and some companies are just interested in verified carbon emission reductions (not removals).

👨‍🌾 Farmer incentives There is a lot at stake to transition – farmers need to invest in new equipment, learn how to manage land differently, and potentially take a hit on their yield for the first years. The revenue from carbon markets is important as it covers some of the transition costs and incentivises farmers to move faster, but is small in the big scheme of things. To support farmers at scale a broader set of incentives is necessary.
