Professional Experience
Before joining Google, Metwally held several significant positions:
- Senior AI/Bioinformatics Scientist at Illumina (2021-2022), where he published research on predictive models for infectious diseases and led multi-omics studies.1
- Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University (2018-2021), where he worked on machine learning methods for biomedical data and contributed to COVID-19 prediction initiatives.1
Research Contributions
Metwally has published over 12 papers in top-tier scientific journals, including Nature and Cell, and holds two US patents related to wearable technology for diabetes prediction.1 His work has significantly advanced the fields of AI and bioinformatics, particularly in health-related applications.
Current Role
In his current role at Google, Metwally leads projects that integrate AI with metabolic health solutions, leveraging his extensive background in machine learning and biomedical engineering to drive innovation in healthcare technology.1
Highlights
It was an honor to contribute to this ground-breaking study published in Science Magazine (https://lnkd.in/gjrSdffm). A huge effort (led by the amazing Petko Fiziev and Jeremy McRae) to identify the rare pathogenic variants of common diseases (e.g., diabetes and cardiovascular disease) based on UK Biobank genotype/phenotype data of 450K participants, and using state-of-the-art genetics large language model (PrimateAI-3D) that was trained on 809 genomes from 233 primate species (such as Monkey).
The development of PrimateAI-3D (led by Hong Gao and Tobias Hamp) and the Primate Catalogue (led by Lukas Kuderna) played a crucial role in enabling this work.
Congratulations to the whole team at Illumina AI Laboratory, and the visionary Kyle Kai-How Farh MD PhD for orchestrating this whole project that led to four Science papers 👏 . It was a blast working with you all!
