Why am I a teacher?
When I was nine, my family moved to Amman. I loved trying hummus and taking in all the sights and sounds, but I believe that the reason I flourished in Amman was because of my school. Ahliyyah & Mutran was a safe place where I was encouraged to learn, experiment, and grow. At Ahliyyah I cultivated knowledge and character. I learned not only Arabic, but hospitality, and friendship. I loved school.
I also loved volunteering. My parents put me in situations where could serve others. They see service as a way to love God. I loved teaching English, tutoring, or organizing children's programs. These activities were chances to be in charge, meet new people, see new perspectives, and interact with children.
In school my favorite subjects were Math and Economics so I chose to study Business and International Studies at University of Pennsylvania. The Huntsman Program allowed me to pursue these degrees seamlessly and with a cohort from all over the world. While in undergrad I interviewed for jobs in consulting, and finance. When these are the jobs sought after by all your peers you have to at least consider them. I graduated without a job but with an offer from Fulbright to research sustainable tourism and SMEs in Oman. Fulbright Association felt like winning the lottery. Having enough money to travel for a year was amazing.
After Fulbright I worked for two non-profits in Philly. I was very passionate about both of these organizations. Both non-profits were understaffed and we relied heavily on highschool and college interns who I mentored, trained, and managed. However I found that in both of these positions, I was most excited on the days I got to work with children, the days I enrolled kids in schools, the days I got to supervise field trips, or the days I guest taught classes.
Moving to teaching in a classroom felt very natural. I studied for exams, had a few months of training, and a lot of online courses. Upon receiving my temporary teachers certificate from the state of Florida, I accepted an offer from a Title 1 school in Miami. I LOVE the students I worked with in Miami. They made me laugh, cry, play, learn, and stay engaged. They challenged my thinking and impressed me with their intellect and kindness. A year ago I decided I wanted to learn Spanish. Speaking Arabic opens many doors for me and living in Florida without speaking Spanish felt wrong. I moved to Mexico City 6 months ago where I now teach 6th and 7th grade Math and am studying and practicing Spanish all the time.
I do not know what is next in my career but I wanted today to take some time to remember why I am where I am and why I do what I do. Many people work for money, that´s a really good reason to work. Many people work so they can have the lifestyle or schedule they want. I do not have the schedule I want (waking up at 5:30 is not my favorite) and I can only afford to save a couple hundred dollars a month. So why am I a teacher???
