Highlights
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great." - Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks)
As we officially embark on another NFL season tonight, I'm not sure there's a quote that better encapsulates the journey for a corporate partnerships team each off-season. Since last fall, our sales team has spent countless hours finding potential new partners, engaging with them, learning the ins and outs of their business, providing them with unique, creative and actionable platforms that will meaningfully impact their business, and negotiating to try to get a deal to come to fruition. If they're lucky, they'll get to yes 2 out of 10 times. Not because they're not elite at what they do, but because prospecting, ideating, presenting and closing is hard, even for the best.
Once the sales team has had success bringing on a new partner, or extending a relationship with a previous partner, the activation team takes the reigns to make the partnership come to life. Being able to draw a blue print is one thing, but being able to actually build the house is something very different. It requires an ability work seamlessly with the partner and a multitude of internal teams. It requires expertise in management of client expectations, establishment of mutually determined and achievable goals, and most importantly, the ability to simply roll up your sleeves and do all of the gritty, detail-oriented work, not until the clock reads a certain time, but until it's done. Doing all of this well is hard. Average won't succeed in this role. Only exceptional will.
While we all hope for an great season on the field, we've already had a great one off the field, and it's thanks to an incredible team who takes pride in being great at something that's not for everyone, because it's hard.
Congrats to Amy Siebenkittel, Marie Zeitler, Rachel Cohen, Peter Obletz, Kate Starr, Jonah Wheeler, Taylor Sullivan, Kurt Gingrich, Chelsea Zahn, Chris Hart, and Tim Post for embracing the hard, and showing yet again what an elite team you are.
Here We Go!
Around this time of year, I always enjoy seeing all of the recent undergrad or grad school graduates announcing their appointment to their first job in sports. In June of 2006, when I walked into Nationwide Arena for my first day as a Corporate Sales Account Executive with the Columbus Blue Jackets (thank you Paul D'Aiuto and Larry Hoepfner), I couldn't believe that I was going to be selling sponsorship for a Big 4 Team and working in an arena every day. I made a point of telling myself to never forget that feeling of excitement and gratitude. Fast forward 18 years, and I still feel a sense of gratitude and awe for what I get to do every day. That doesn't mean every day has felt that way for 18 years. In the end, a job in sports is still a job, and there will be hard days/weeks/months. Whenever I find myself facing those times when I forget how special what we get to do every day is, I'll walk into Acrisure Stadium to get a glimpse of the field, or think back to other other pinch me moments along the way, and it will invariably bring those June 2006 feelings flooding back. Good luck to all of those just beginning your journey - you've picked the best thing in the world to be a part of.
