What a fabulous 'nudge' for advertising industry to err on the side of truth rather than on plausible falsehoods! The recent Supreme court directive about self-declaration might be tedious in the short term, but in the long term it forces us to have a 'skin in the game' in the publics. it forces us to engage with reality, the impact ads have on people. It forces ad industry to become more trustworthy. I am sure, i am not seeing some second order effect which becomes too onerous. but hell, i love the direction it forces us to take.
The change won't come from self-regulation, i am sure. The incentives are simply not there. it has been a lottery of sorts when it comes to corrective changes - when some influencer or concerned citizen makes noise and forces advertisers to change. the change then has been sporadic and limited. this directive makes it systemic.
it shifts the default setting. towards being more truthful.
we need more of these nudges, especially in the climate-change epoch.
