Last season we had a large scale stem borer attack in our paddy fields. Even after spraying the right dose of pesticide, our field had a minor infestation and we dug deeper to understand the possible reasons.
We isolated this incident to ineffective spraying and modelled the spraying pattern in Python to get a visual understanding as to what was happening.
We use knapsack sprayers for spraying our fields. Operators mount knapsack sprayers on their back and walk the paths as they spray. The primary problem with knapsack sprayers is the non-uniform spray pattern.
In our simulation in the video, you will notice areas with excess spray and dead zones with zero spray. This wastes pesticide and creates safe havens for pests that multiply as soon as the effect wears off. Typically at the start, when the knapsack sprayer is full, operators walk slowly. Along the path, their speed increases as the sprayers get lighter. They get paid per acre they spray and the system unintentionally incentivizes them to walk faster and exacerbates the problem!
Boom Sprayers that work on small plots of land would be an ideal solution to this problem. At Farm Chakra we are working on a version of our own and testing it in various fields. We'd love to collaborate with #agritech enthusiasts/companies building effective spraying equipment for small plots of land. Before anyone jumps in and suggests #drones , I have a follow up post on current challenges with drones!
