Highlights
Some breaking AI news today, as Meta launches their Llama 3.1 family of LLMs now including the big one: Llama 3.1 405B, i.e. by far the best open-source AI model ever released.
This is the first time a genuine frontier model has been open to the public. So it's potentially quite a big deal and could turn out to be a pivotal moment in the overall AI race.
In fact, by many metrics, it's right up there with GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet as the best general-purpose LLM.
In my view, this makes Llama the default enterprise option, for reasons outlined by Zuck in his post "Open Source AI Is the Path Forward":
- Enterprises want control over models and fine-tuning
- Enterprises don't want vendor lock-in
- Enterprises want to control and secure their data
- Enterprises want cost-efficiency
- Enterprises want to choose stable platforms
Are you betting on Llama?

It's been a long while since a post of mine went a bit viral. The Death of SaaS now has more than 5k+ reads and is still picking up steam after 10 days.
No doubt the clickbaity title is pretty catchy, but in my experience of writing and posting hundreds of essays over the years, the ones that get passed around in WhatsApp groups and social media are able to encapsulate a sort of time-sensitive "aha moment".
I literally have hundreds of such ideas in my Apple Notes, most of which are now stale and never quite clicked strongly enough for me to bother writing something.
In this case, a lot of people are seeing the LLM hype but in reality, the software world runs on SaaS now. So it's an obvious target. What will happen at the intersection of AI and SaaS? All I'm doing is connecting some dots that I've been thinking about, and exploring the conclusions.
Also worth mentioning, is that I don't use LLMs for any part of the writing process. I do use them for graphics and charts, but NOT for brainstorming, outlining, drafting, or even editorial. I just want to be in 100% control of articulating my thoughts, because that's the part that is valuable and engaging to me.
I almost exclusively write about topics close to my work, so the writing is very synergistic for me to clarify my own thinking on a given topic, and what implications may be relevant to my future work.
