What. A. Year.

About 12 months ago I took a leap of faith and stepped out of my comfort zone to join a startup. Last week that startup, TaxBit, announced a broad restructuring, letting go about half of its staff, including much of our senior management, and me.

There’s definitely the sense of disappointment in losing the opportunity to work with some of the best colleagues I’ve ever had, but I can’t say it was a huge shock. The market, regulatory landscape, and the effect of that landscape on the market, presented TaxBit with some ongoing headwinds. Tough times require tough decisions, and I wholeheartedly respect TaxBit's need make the call it did. I can’t thank Austin Woodward and Daniel Kluesing enough for providing me with such a fulfilling and rewarding opportunity.

So what’s next for me? I left big-tech for a startup with the goal of getting more experience, faster. And, well, it worked. Every moment at TaxBit was a learning opportunity, and the combination of agency and responsibility that I had while there was a pure thrill. Focusing on increasing that “Experience-Per-Minute” metric turned out to be wildly fulfilling, and something I intend to carry forward in my future role. Equally important, however, is joining a team and tackling a problem that resonate with me in an exceptional way.

While the first-generation immigrant voice inside me is demanding that I be more nervous, I’m oddly at peace and honestly excited about this period of uncertainty. A year of exploring uncharted waters has a way of increasing tolerance for the unknown. 12 months ago I took a leap. While it may not have worked out, it definitely worked.

I can't wait to do it again.

My schedule is wide open and I’d be thrilled to catch up, just chat, or discuss any roles you think I’d be a strong fit for. Looking forward to hearing from you and exploring what the future holds.
