Understanding the Technical Differences Between ETL and ELT
This was discussed at the Data Engineers London at Baringa last Thursday, & it seems like it's an area that's not well understood.
In bare terms, ETL transforms data before loading it into the data warehouse, ensuring clean data is stored.
ELT, conversely, loads raw data first and transforms it within the database, allowing for scalability and complex queries.
(In practice ELT can be more like ETLT, at least in transition, but that's a longer story for another day!)
I overheard somebody say 'I haven't really seen any use cases for ELT, but I work with corporates'. But I certainly know corporates beginning to leverage ELT.
Which method aligns better with your data strategy?
