Highlights
I’m happy to share that the New York Outcomes Fund has reached its goal of enrolling 10,000 acres in its pilot program! The pilot pays growers for greenhouse gas and water quality outcomes generated from implementing #regenerativeagriculture practices on their fields to support #soilhealth, #climateresilience, and #cleanwater on farms across New York’s Great Lakes Region. I’m very grateful to Cargill, Cornell Cooperative Extension, the New York Corn & Soybean Growers Association, the Soil and Water Outcomes Fund, and the Great Lakes Protection Fund for joining with the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability to move sustainability research to action. The pioneering and visionary leadership of our partners enabled us to test the feasibility of a novel solution to a big question. And most importantly, a huge thank you to the 25 growers in the pilot who enrolled 400+ fields across 14 counties. Through your #covercrops, #reducedtill, and #notill interventions, we estimate this pilot will lead to over 6,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions and removals, 110,000 pounds of nitrogen reductions, and 5,500 pounds of phosphorous reductions in a critical watershed. Our work doesn’t stop here! It’s a pilot for a reason – we’re hoping to learn as much as we can this year, leveraging the data collected and continuing to co-create with our growers and partners.
