I was sad to learn that my mentor Derek Birdsall had passed.
He was a bear of a man, who created the most elegant timeless graphic design. A master in the practice of typography, a master craftsman, and RDI. We met at the Royal College of Art, he was then visiting professor of graphic design, I was someone that had no formal design education but a burning desire to learn. Through great persistence I found a way to have an audience with Derek.
He sat there rolling a cigarette (Old Holborn), looked at my work and said to the course director, ‘this is the type of person we should have here’. He put his hand out and pulled me up, my jaw hit the floor.
Rules said, I could not join the RCA. So instead, Derek invited me to his studio, in Islington, Compton Terrace. It blew my mind: the printing presses of Alan Kitching, trestle tables where two 240 page books were laid out, one on the artist Lucien Freud, the other on photographer Margret Bourke-White. Then on bookshelves more books than I had ever seen outside of my local public library, plus posters, art, and the poker table (if you know you know). I was mesmerised. Derek's invitation – I would come on a Saturday morning and a Wednesday to spend time with him. He gave me books I should read, he gave books he had designed. He always introduced me to the free flowing of folks in his studio, with generosity. And then to the pub.
At the Compton Arms, Derek would share his wisdom on design: ‘start with the space between the lines, ‘always make your work feel inevitable, so the client cannot imagine it any other way’, ‘elegance, make it elegant Alan’, ‘always make a work of quality’. He would also share his wisdom on life, ‘always take a piss before you leave the pub’. On this last matter I have reflected often.
Derek supported me through the early part of my career, and gave me the runway to fly, opening doors, introducing me to clients and other designers such as Alan Fletcher at Pentagram and David Eliis at Why Not Associates. I was given a high bar, and one I have tried to excel at everyday.
Derek I think of you often, your wisdom has never left me. With deep gratitude I want to thank you for the kindness that you and your family (Shirley and Elsa) gave to me. Whenever possible I try to offer a hand to one that needs a little help, so they can make a life that would not be possible any other way.
