6-2-5-4. Those numbers are remarkably close to the combination of the bicycle lock I used to lock up my bike at my hometown swimming pool over my summer breaks as a kid. Summer was all about the freedom to ride, the summer breeze in my face, and stopping in at the store on the corner of Main and Pleasant Street for some choice candy selections on a kid’s summer budget. Summertime as a kid represented the height of personal agency, exploration, and curiosity. Then, like most of us, I grew up and somehow fell into more “adult” patterns focused on following the script of whatever role or identity I was to uphold in the world around me. And soon enough, those qualities became less evident under ever increasing responsibilities. And, because it drives so many other good things in life, curiosity an especially high-value trait. So here is the thing, we need to be curious and foster curiosity in others at every opportunity. Why? Because the benefits of curiosity are an important key to living that “summertime life” we remember and want to experience again in whatever personal or professional life phase we find ourselves in. So, here are the numbers based on some interesting findings out of some recent research at The Oxford Review. 6 benefits of curiosity. 2 forms of curiosity. 5 dimensions of curiosity. 4 profiles of the curious. It turns out there is a lot more to curiosity than resolving an open question, solving a problem, or simply learning something new. See you at the pool!
Typically, when someone refers to someone or something as “half baked”, it’s not a particularly positive comment. Yet in contrast, Seth Godin recently shared a blog post suggesting the value of creating the conditions for doing great work that involves considering just that. In leveraging the creative tension inherent in putting work out there while it’s still in process, you just might create something spectacular or genius. Whatever you may be thinking about creating as you head into the weekend, consider this idea alongside it. Go ahead, exercise both your courage and freedom. It will be fine! Put down those censoring constraints that don't really have much to offer you tomorrow, they are only trying to protect yesterday. “Half-baked work, shared in a trusting environment, is the fuel for the system that created the works of genius.” - Seth Godin
