Alan Willsky

Professor at MIT

Alan Willsky is a prominent professor emeritus in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He joined MIT in 1973 and led the Stochastic Systems Group until June 2014. Willsky also served as the director of MIT’s Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) from 2009 to 2014.

He is recognized for his contributions to signal processing, machine learning, and systems control, and has authored significant texts including Signals and Systems, which is widely used in undergraduate education. His research interests focus on multidimensional and multiresolution estimation and imaging, with applications in areas such as aircraft failure detection, surveillance systems, and medical imaging.124

Willsky has received numerous accolades, including being named a Fellow of the IEEE and an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). He has also been honored with several prestigious awards such as the Alfred Noble Prize and the Technical Achievement Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society.123
