With enormous gratitude to my stellar team, I’ll be moving on from my role as Executive Director with Blue Ventures later this summer.
Our journey started in 2001 on a remote beach in the Mozambique Channel. I’d seen time and again that the world needed a new approach to ocean protection − one that started with listening to the needs of coastal communities. Nowhere was this more important than in the tropics, where hundreds of millions of people depend on the sea for survival.
We hardwired BV with a founding credo that puts the needs of communities first. We learned from communities how to develop approaches to conservation that work for people as well as nature, and we’ve been humbled to see these ideas take hold. Two decades on, community-led marine conservation is mainstream. And today, across the tropics our 300+ staff are supporting communities, movements and campaigns that are making lasting changes on the water and in ocean policy.
I’m excited to be handing over the reins to our outstanding leadership team, and to have the opportunity to bring in new talent and experience to BV. I won’t be going far, and am thrilled to be joining the new Ocean Resilience and Climate Alliance, a coalition of philanthropic funders committing more than $300 million to help tackle the climate crisis by providing surge funding to ocean-climate solutions.
I am beyond grateful to all BV allies − past and present − for journeying with me over so many nautical miles. I am continually inspired by your dedication to our founding vision, and of the movement that we have built together, and I look forward to supporting the next generation of BV’s leadership to continue this vital work.
