Twenty years since the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Three years of working with some amazing people and many more years of friendship and collaboration as I worked in, on and around global events for the next two decades. Seven Olympics, two Fifa World Cups, an Asian Games, four Commonwealth Games and a bunch of stuff in the cracks around all of the above. As Manager of the Olympic Youth Camp I was privileged to welcome 400 young people from 200 Olympic nations to Sydney for a celebration of sport, culture and understanding. With an awesome staff, mostly volunteers, of 100 we spent 22 days in 12 locations around Australia. We experienced the Opening Ceremony, many different sporting highlights including Cathy Freeman’s awesome 400 M Gold Medal run. We did a 3 day homestay I n 10 rural communities and then all visited Cairns to experience the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest and spent a whole day with the Yarrabah Community to learn about our indigenous culture. All this was made possible with the support of so many of my colleagues at SOCOG in the different FA’s (functional areas). Too many to list but be assured there were very few FAs not involved!! Thank you for the memories and the friendships!!
