I’ve been looking for a role in Community Marketing or Brand Management for almost 13 months. I don’t talk about it often on LinkedIn because I realize I’m not an anomaly. Like thousands of others, I experienced a layoff and have been looking for work.
I don’t let it get me down that I’m more than qualified for each Community Marketing role that I apply to and most Brand Manager roles as well, but I do draw the line at white men telling me what would "bring me joy."
Recently, I applied to a Community Marketing role at a B2B SaaS company (which I’ve led as a Community Manager at three) and reached out to the hiring manager (who is also a community mgr) to express my interest in the role. This morning I received the message in the photo attached.
I can almost guarantee that my years of Community Marketing experience at very successful B2B, SaaS organizations were overlooked by my experiential-community-marketing work at Anheuser-Busch and more specifically, my experience co-creating Black Girls Chillin, a digital and IRL community.
I can't help but wonder if I looked more like his idea of a Community Marketing Manager, or co-created a community on a subject he was a bit more well-versed in, would this message have been sent? Truly, where does he get off bringing my joy around the profession into question? Especially considering the joy he's questioning is displayed through my commitment to fostering community outside of my 9 to 5.
It’s exhausting, but I trust that what’s for me is for me so I continue on the job hunt. I just thought I’d share because it’s important that when you hear that someone has been applying to roles for X number of months you can’t begin to imagine what they’ve probably experienced.... especially if they are a woman, and ESPECIALLY if they are a Black woman.
