Since the start of 2024, we've welcomed two cohorts into the Museum Education Experience Program (MEEP). This past Friday marked the final day of our summer cohort. In few short weeks, we'll welcome our fall cohort. Many colleagues at the Museum help welcome our interns, but I want to shout out Akrm A. (MEEP Summer 2023) for his direct and daily contributions over the last two program cycles. Bringing enthusiasm and authenticity to our work is crucial, and MEEP couldn't do it without the support of dedicated teaching assistants like Akrm.

MEEP interns support visitor learning and engagement. They bring wonder and joy to their work. They're integral to helping programs like Museum Discovery Day and Earth Fest. They contribute to learning exchanges with interns from other museums like those who've connected with us from New York Historical Society, Yale Peabody, and Brooklyn Museum. Recently, they’ve been talking to our exhibitions department, providing insights from their experiences working within our halls to inform new features and updates. Above all, MEEP interns connect with and inspire young people and families, sharing in a love of learning about the world around us.

The fall 2024 recruitment cycle is still open, and we're accepting applications until August 23. If you know undergraduates looking for a unique experience, please share the link. All undergraduate majors and backgrounds are welcome. To be a successful MEEP intern, you need an open mind, an interest in science and new experiences.

As this year draws to a close, I am feeling grateful for and inspired by the relentless courage and imagination of our young people.

Our emerging professionals shone brightly within our walls. They embraced challenges, fearlessly asked tough questions, searched for insights, and shared their knowledge and stories. They ventured beyond our walls– sparking dialogue at conferences and summits, bringing people together through domino playing, crafting news articles, putting together art exhibits, growing mushroom farms, joining research labs, developing Fulbright proposals, and the list goes on...

Their enthusiasm is as expected. As a seasoned youth worker, I've known the mutual rewards of collaborating with young people and am thrilled that our city is expanding opportunities for youth engagement with its inclusive economy action plan. We will contribute to that good work for the benefit of our communities.

At #AMNH, 2023 was marked by the opening of the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation. It enabled us to welcome interns year-round through the Museum Education Experience Program (MEEP), supported the joyous in-person return of the internship for youth of Grand Ronde and helped us grow our team of dedicated part-time youth education teaching assistants. These moves reflect our mission to increase the ways people feel welcomed, inspired, and encouraged to explore the world around them and their own immense potential through nurturing and embracing the perspectives and assets they bring to the table. I am sending a heartfelt thank you to all my colleagues who support making this happen. Your involvement and care are the cornerstone of our expansive community. We couldn't do what we do without you... and plenty of pizza. 🍕💓
