Albert Fischer

Albert Fischer is a prominent figure in the field of oceanography and global ocean observation systems. He served as the Director of the GOOS Project Office and Head of the Ocean Observations and Services Section at the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO from March 2012 to December 2022.1

Fischer's career in ocean science and management spans over two decades. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography, which he completed between 1994 and 2000.1 His educational background also includes a S.B. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1990-1994).1

Currently, Albert Fischer holds the position of Director of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System Branch in the Infrastructure Department at the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, a role he has occupied since January 2023.1

Throughout his career, Fischer has been instrumental in advancing global ocean observation efforts. His work has contributed significantly to the development and coordination of international programs aimed at improving our understanding and management of the world's oceans.12
