Highlights
At Least X% of Y will do Z
So simple, and yet so powerful.
For example:
AT LEAST 5% OF medium-size luxury sedan buyers WILL buy a Tesla Model 3 for $40,000+ in 2019
or
AT LEAST 30% OF Netflix DVD-by-mail subscribers in the US WILL switch to streaming only for $8.99/mo in 2007
Eight years after I first formulated the XYZ Hypothesis during Stanford office hours, it's still the #1 thing I teach to aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators.
Why? Because there is no clearer, simpler, more powerful way to:
-
Be clear about what your idea is, what your target market is, and what you expect your target market to do with your idea.
-
Explain/communicate your idea to potential investors, employees, partners, etc.
-
Provide both a framework and a benchmark for validating your idea (e.g., with pretotyping.)
But you don't have to go to Stanford to learn it, or even buy my book. Here's two ways you can learn about an unleash the power of the XYZ Hypothesis in as little as 10 minutes:
- The XYZ Hypothesis in 10 minutes video on YouTube:

- The XYZ Hypothesis chapter in the FREE PDF of "Pretotype It—10th Anniversary Edition":

Big Bang Theory, Chaos, and You
In the very earliest stages of a new project, be it writing a book (my current focus), or starting a company, or starting a new project, it is best to EXPECT CHAOS—or even better, to EMBRACE CHAOS.
By that I mean that you should not be surprised if your ideas are all over the map, if you make a number of false starts, if you have to drastically revise your initial assumptions and hypothesis.
Like in the Big Bang, a project starts with a SPARK of an idea, a JOLT OF ENERGY, and then ... CHAOS ... for a while ... and probably for longer that you would like.
But that ENERGIZED CHAOS IS GOOD, it's necessary.
As Nietzsche put it "You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star."
Brilliant ideas, dancing stars, rarely emerge from certainty and order, but from fuzzy, messy, often contradictory, either intuitive or counterintuitive more fundamental elements + a lot of energy. That energy is necessary to make those basic elements have to smash together, combine, fuse, split until a few combinations STICK together and things begin to crystallize.
As Steven Pressfield writes—MOMENTUM IS MESSY. But the most important thing through all this chaos, is to keep the momentum up.
What that means is that you must keep pouring energy on that project even when it looks messy. Even when you have to throw away 98% of the work you've done so far and start again from the 2% that is salvageable. Even if the result is now far from what you originally thought your new book, or you new product would be like.
Hopefully, unlike with stars, it will not take a few billions years for your ideas to crystallize and come together in a new book, a new product, or new startup.
I hope that this post provides you with some comfort and courage when you find yourself in the inevitable chaos and uncertainty stage of your project.
Alberto
