I just came back from spending a week in Bangalore for the G20 Digital Innovation Alliance. While it was a brief visit, I wanted to share a couple of reflections about the visit to India and its startup ecosystem, because I know a lot of US founders don’t get the opportunity to experience it first hand.

I am bit late to the game, but let’s just say I am incredibly excited about the startup and innovation ecosystem in India. The opportunity provided by MeitY Startup Hub and The Global Education & Leadership Foundation (tGELF) to launch the G20 DIA Accelerator in India and beyond is truly unique. A couple things that struck me during the visit:

  • I’ve never seen a more ambitious and driven group of founders that know they are experiencing a once in a lifetime opportunity to drive the digital transformation of 1.4 people, and at the same time have zero expectation that they are entitled to success. It is honestly so inspiring to see an entire generation of founders (many of which left amazing salaries at FAANG companies in the US) so committed to making positive change in their country. This is why OneValley is so committed to India’s startup ecosystem. Tenacious founders win, and there is no community I’ve met that are more driven than founders in India.

  • India is at least 5 years ahead of the US in consumer technology adoption (maybe 10). Every merchant from the Four Seasons to the coconut vendors on the roadside take digital payments. I watched people who were 70-80 years old seamlessly using mobile app payments in every context when I can barely get my parents signed into Netflix.

  • There is a deep tech revolution happening in India. The first wave of venture-backed Indian companies may have been replicating established western models, but that is a footnote in history now. This week I met brilliant founders working on reusable rockets, medical robotics, new biofuels, quantum chips, amazing waste reprocessing technology and I had the opportunity to moderate a panel of some of India’s top deep tech VCs. If you are building in any of these spaces, OneValley wants to know you and get involved. Reach out. This is why I went into VC and creating startup ecosystems. I can promise you the next generation of Indian startups will be solving some of the worlds biggest challenges and, on Day 1, will be working at a scale that honestly isn’t even possible for most US founders. And we need this now more than ever. We have so many generational scale challenges - I get comfort knowing amazing founders across the globe are on the job.

  • We are seeing reverse brain drain for the first time in history. I met dozens of founders who came to the US for school and to work at FAANG and then have chosen to return to India to launch their startups. This would have been unimaginable 10 years ago. There is an undeniable sense of pride and purpose that is driving this.

Apple products are ridiculously expensive and not worth it…. until you use a non-Apple product. Honestly, Apple should just gift everyone a pair of generic wireless headphones. No one would ever leave Apple again.
