Needless to say, investments also come with the probability of making a return - otherwise nobody would touch them!

Let's suppose you find an investment and after doing due diligence you arrive at the following probabilities
- 25% probability of losing everything
- 50% probability of breakeven
- 25% probability of doubling your money
I.e. 25%(-100%) +50%(0%) +25%*(100%) = 0% EXPECTED return
So you're better off choosing a 5% CD, which has 100% chance of a 5% return, thereby being the expected value as well.
Of course, this doesn't account to reinvestment risk on the CD and tax benefits ... but I also wouldn't recommend making investment decisions based on tax benefits :)
