Just returned from an enriching experience at the BBVA Andean Investor Trip across Colombia, Peru, and Chile—an annual event that never fails to impress. Three countries in five days made for an intense schedule, but the insights gained were invaluable. From engaging with key stakeholders such as the Central Bank, Ministry of Finance, local economists, political analysts, and local investors, it's evident that Latin America is at a pivotal juncture.
In Colombia, the political landscape took center stage, with Gustavo Petro's escalating radicalization sparking intrigue. Facing hurdles in Congress, his move towards mobilizing society for a Constitutional Assembly presents a significant development.
In Peru, after four quarters of contraction, the economy is finally on the upswing. Despite this, inflation is converging to target, thanks to a negative output gap. This gives the Central Bank ample room to further cut rates, potentially sparking a rally in the bond curve.
In Chile, despite heightened currency volatility, the BCCh's unwavering focus on inflation targeting suggests a continued stance on easing, leaving long end rates and the CLP bearish in my outlook.
Exciting times lie ahead for investors navigating the complex dynamics of the Andean region.
