Highlights
It was great to be at Federation University Australia's Gippsland Open Day a couple of weeks ago, as part of the industry groups speaking to students and parents about careers.
My observations were that offshore wind was the biggest industry group at the Open Day by far. In addition to Corio Generation, there were at least four other offshore wind developers there, as well as other energy companies with a renewables bent.
It's important we speak with young minds and students today to join the future offshore wind industry.
We'll need thousands of people to develop and build our offshore wind farms over the next six to 15 years. There'll be another 30 to 40 years of operations, as these projects generate renewable electricity for Australia. It doesn't take much to see the potential for a long and successful career in offshore wind.
While we'd like these students to take up technical degrees and training, there are also other professions which underpin a successful and sustainable enterprise. These include careers in environment and sustainability, people and culture, finance, business services, IT and communications and stakeholder relations.
Another important part to developing the future workforce, will be strong partnerships with educational institutions across the spectrum from secondary schools, maritime colleges, TAFEs and universities.
Let's not forget we've got complementary industries which can transition into offshore wind - for example oil and gas, mining and other major infrastructure projects.
My thanks to Ravi Kaskana, Transmission Director, for being there with me.
It was very nice to have met up with Stella Bodman from Star of the South and Kate Lancaster from BlueFloat Energy too. I certainly look forward to collaborating with other offshore developers as we focus on benefits for the local community and future workforce to come.
Corio will be at next week's Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) APAC Offshore Wind Summit (https://lnkd.in/gp2Ef6mt) as Event Ambassadors. There will be a free jobs fair on the third conference day, Thu 31 Aug, 9am-12pm - get your free tickets here: https://lnkd.in/e6-fpEh2.
We will then be at the Gippsland New Energy Conference (https://gnec.com.au/) in Sale as a Gold Partner.
I invite you to come and have a chat with us.
I’ve been extremely fortunate in my career to have worked in some really interesting jobs. But as I attended the Clean Energy Council's Australian Wind Industry Summit in Melbourne yesterday, I sensed a level of excitement I haven’t seen in quite a while.
Not only are we on the cusp of a brand-new industry with the first declared offshore wind energy zone right here in Victoria, the impact for Australia as a whole is immense. We will literally be one of the first offshore wind projects to generate power for millions of homes.
Cheers to the great team that I work with every day. We are all set to electrify Australia. #offshorewind
